Chickaloon River
Alaska Range/Talkeetna Mountains
The Chickaloon river originates high in the the peaks of the Talkeetna Mountains in the central Alaska Range. This sweet and remote glacial river cuts it’s way through a narrow walled canyon and contains an almost continuous stretch of fun Class III white water before it joins the much larger Matanuska River.

We’ll combine some high alpine hiking with a 2 day white water run of the Chikaloon River by flying by bush plane to a high mountain pass above the Chickaloons headwaters. We’ll spend two nights base camping here hiking and exploring in the company of glaciers and high peaks before making our way to the river and the start of our river trip. We’ll run the exciting canyon of the Chickaloon to the Matanuska River and take out near the community of Chickaloon. This itinerary should be considered an extreme adventure and only those in good physical condition and willing and able to hike rough terrain and paddle serious whitewater should consider this trip. This itinerary starts and ends in Anchorage, Alaska.
